Issue Position: Improving Education in Prince George's County

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014
Issues: K-12 Education

One issue that I know is important to many families -- is the quality of Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS). This year we passed the Prince George's County Academic Revitalization and Management Effectiveness Initiative.

This legislation changed the structure of our Board of Education to include appointed members with education, business, finance, or nonprofit management experience. In addition, this legislation gave the County Executive the authority to appoint the Chief Executive Officer of PGCPS from a list of candidates provided by a state search committee.

I supported this legislation because I believe that our schools deserve a leader that has experience managing a school system as large and diverse as ours. More importantly, I believe that our schools need someone that is invested in the county and won't leave for another school system or organization.
That is why I was happy to hear that the County Executive appointed Dr. Kevin Maxwell, a long-time resident and former graduate, educator, and principal in Prince George's County. As a State Delegate for Prince George's County, I will continue to support legislation that reforms and improves our school system.

In addition to supporting school reform, I support legislation that invests in our classrooms. This year I supported legislation that brings an additional $6 million for security improvements, $12 million in disparity funding over the next five years, and $30 million in general education funding. This money will help support projects such as the renovation of University Park Elementary School. These projects will not only keep our children safe, they will also help create new modern environments that are more conducive to learning.
